This carriage clock was made (and signed) by the Couaillet family from the French region of St-Nicolas-d'Aliermont. This area of France is renowned for both large and small firms of clock makers. The Couaillet family produced clocks mainly for export to the United Kingdom. The main factory was set up in the late 1800's, destroyed by fire and rebuilt. The main building was once again destroyed by fire and rebuilt yet again in 1913. They continued to supply clocks to the retail trade up until the middle of the 20th century. This clock is circa 1900.
Another unusual aspect of this carriage clock, given its size, is that it has an alarm, with the bell built into the bottom of the case / movement.
This very elegant and very solid and sturdy miniature carriage clock, which is housed in a SOLID BRONZE case, is JUST 4 inches tall (5 inches with the handle standing in an upright position), 3 inches wide, and 2 1/4 inches in depth. It would be a beautiful piece to sit on any mantle (or mantel).
The clock, including its case, is in excellent condition. The only minor "defect" to point to are the cracks that are in the porcelain on the dial, and can be seen in the photos. Partly because of where they are, and given the overall beauty of this clock, they do not detract from the overall beauty, style and elegance of this clock.
The movement is of excellent quality, being made by the famous and highly regarded Couaillet company, and is in very good overall condition. The movement has just been cleaned by a master clocksmith, and is in excellent running condition.
A key is included.
